This essay aims at reviewing gecekondu policy in Turkey with a view, to developing guidelines for a gecekondu policy that would tackle the immediate problems at hand. For that reason emphasis is placed upon what is possible in the short run and not what is ideal in the unforeseeable future. They study was realized by combing through the existing primary data and secondary sources as well as by carrying out a case study of one squatter area - the Rumelihisarüstü gecekondu area in İstanbul.
